In his statement, Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that fiber optic networks are the digital communication highways, and with the implementation of this project, an intercontinental submarine connection will be made possible, where Albania will have a key position in facilitating this strategic link.
He said this project is a cornerstone of what Albania will be in 2030.
"It will guarantee access on this new Mediterranean route for several countries in Central Europe. From one side, this is a welcomed project because it significantly increases the mosaic of projects to transform Albania into a champion country for innovation. But it is also an important project for the overall confidence in entrepreneurship. The project doesn't have astronomical figures, but fundamentally, it is a project that will create astronomical impact and value. This is a milestone for Albania in 2030," said Rama.
The Understanding Agreement foresees the fulfillment of commitments that Albania has, also in the framework of cooperation with strategic partners such as the United States and the European Union, related to respecting the highest standards of safety and reliable digital infrastructure, as well as connectivity with third countries. It promotes ensuring the selection of reliable submarine cable providers, especially for intercontinental ICT projects that promote trustworthy providers for alternative digital routes connecting Europe, North America, and Asia.
"This initiative will enable the increase in the number of submarine cable networks, an expansion of the existing infrastructure, and also responds to the need to increase the capacities of networks with the growing volume of digital data traffic we have globally today. Other objectives of this project will be to increase the potential for income, not only for private companies but certainly for the Albanian state as well," said Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku.
The Deputy Prime Minister added further that "the investment, valued between 100 to 115 million euros, is welcomed by the Albanian Government, aligning with the policies we have for the development of technology and digitalization in our country. On the other hand, it is in full compliance with the plans we have."
