Ambassador King-Smith's remarks came during a two-day conference on "Strengthening Accountability: Empowering efforts against corruption in the Western Balkans." The conference, hosted by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of State for Public Administration and Anti-Corruption, in collaboration with the Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime, received support from the UK Government.

The British Ambassador highlighted the ongoing challenge of corruption in Albanian society and called for increased efforts to counter this pervasive issue. Recognizing that corruption seeps into both public and private spheres, he stressed the importance of independent institutions taking a leading role in shaping the next phase of justice reforms.

"Albania must recognize that corruption continues to infiltrate society – public and private sector – and take greater steps to counter it. Not because international partners like us are concerned, but because this is essential for Albania’s own development," remarked Ambassador King-Smith.

He further urged caution in political engagement alongside these independent institutions during further reform, emphasizing the potential risks that such involvement could pose to the progress already achieved. Instead, he encouraged institutions to propose areas where they require more support and where changes could enhance, rather than constrain, the rule of law.

Ambassador King-Smith's call for collaborative efforts in the fight against corruption was underscored by his participation in the conference alongside representatives from governmental institutions, criminal justice bodies, international organizations, academia, and civil society. The collective focus was on fighting corruption, addressing the culture of impunity for criminals, and strengthening accountability.

As Albania navigates its path towards a more transparent and accountable future, the UK Embassy stands as a committed partner, advocating for the empowerment of independent institutions and collaborative efforts in the fight against corruption. The success of justice reforms in Albania hinges on recognizing the continued threat of corruption and taking proactive steps to counter it for the nation's own development.
