Albania aims to modernize its armed forces over the next decade to respond to new security challenges. According to the recently published Military Strategy, the main focus will be on modernizing defense systems against drones, short-range air defense systems, as well as medium-range air defense systems.

Moreover, the project envisages the development of platforms for launching rockets with long-range capabilities. Albania will continue to procure multi-purpose helicopters, both for civilian defense and military operations. The novelty in this case is the plan to acquire fighter aircraft. Following the decommissioning of "MiG" aircraft and other models dating back to before 1990, this is the first time the Albanian military aims for replacement, following the acquisition of drones and helicopters from partner countries.
Maritime defense will also be enhanced with a medium-level vessel and a warship. Land defense is expected to include the availability of armored vehicles for both battlefield use and mobility. Light weapons will continue to be supplied for battalions in Albania. Furthermore, in response to Ukraine's request and NATO's priority, Albania will increase the production of small arms and ammunition.
This military modernization strategy demonstrates Albania's commitment to ensuring its defense capabilities align with evolving security threats. It also reflects the country's efforts to strengthen its position within NATO and contribute to collective security efforts in the region.
