Montenegro Cracks Down on Border Police Corruption: 8 Officers Arrested for Alleged Bribery

In a significant move to combat corruption within its ranks, Montenegro recently announced the arrest of eight border police officers suspected of accepting bribes from foreign nationals originating from Albania, Turkey, and Kosovo. The announcement was made on Wednesday in a press conference by Montenegro's Minister of Internal Affairs, Danilo Sharanović.

According to Sharanović, seven officers were apprehended on Tuesday at their workplace at the border crossing between Montenegro and Albania in Božaj-Hani i Hotit, with another officer arrested in Danilovgrad, a city near Podgorica.

"The evidence suggests that the arrested officers have been accepting money from travelers for an extended period to evade official procedures and have also taken money within the scope of their duties," stated Sharanović.

This operation, Sharanović noted, spanned over five months, during which charges were also filed against 27 individuals from Albania, Turkey, and Kosovo suspected of offering bribes. In response to such incidents, Minister Sharanović emphasized that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro has issued regulations to monitor the assets, income, and lifestyle of police officers.

Border police and customs officials at crossings between Montenegro and Albania have frequently come under scrutiny for acts of abuse of power and passive corruption. Official analyses have prompted investigative actions and arrests against those implicated.

The crackdown on corruption within Montenegro's border control agencies underscores the government's commitment to upholding integrity and transparency in law enforcement. By holding accountable those who betray the public trust, Montenegro aims to fortify its institutions and foster a culture of accountability and responsibility.

As Montenegro takes decisive steps to root out corruption, it sends a clear message that unethical conduct will not be tolerated, and those found culpable will face the full force of the law. This enforcement action marks a pivotal moment in Montenegro's ongoing efforts to combat corruption and uphold the principles of justice and fairness.
