In a successful anti-drug operation, Greek police at the port of Piraeus discovered and seized 210 kilograms of cocaine on Tuesday. The drugs were hidden in a container of frozen shrimp that had originated from Latin America and were destined for Albania.
Authorities have released details of the operation, estimating that the value of the seized drugs exceeds 5 million euros.
The operation was conducted by officers from the Narcotics Prosecutor's Office in collaboration with the American DEA, targeting an organization that has previously transported drugs from Latin America.
Four individuals have been arrested: two Albanian nationals and two Greeks, all known to Greek police as criminal figures. During the operation, police also raided the homes of the arrested individuals, finding additional cocaine, cannabis, over 130,000 euros in cash, weapons, and ammunition.
Investigations have revealed that the network's organizer is a 48-year-old Albanian, responsible for sourcing the drugs, financing their purchase, and arranging their transport to Greece. He concealed the drugs in containers and organized their distribution from Panama to European countries.
The 48-year-old's direct partner is a 36-year-old compatriot who recruited partners in Greece to ensure the safe passage of the drugs through Piraeus port.
Regarding the Greek members of the group, one was responsible for communicating with criminal organization members based abroad, coordinating supply and financing the purchase of drugs to be trafficked. The other ensured the leader's protection, taking necessary measures to avoid his arrest.
It is worth noting that the 48-year-old Albanian, identified as the group's leader, has been wanted since 2017 for financing and establishing a laboratory for producing synthetic drugs.
