The scenario surrounding today's midday tragedy at the infamous Korydallos Prison in Greece, where 35-year-old Alfons Doci was fatally stabbed, has taken a dramatic turn.

Initially, Altin Vokri was reported as the perpetrator, who had been injured himself during the altercation. However, Greek investigators, after reviewing footage from prison cameras, have identified Xhuliano Halili as the actual perpetrator of the crime.

Upon confronting the evidence, Halili admitted to the murder, confessing that he had stabbed his comrade with a kitchen knife following an earlier dispute over room temperature.

The clash between Halili, Doci, and Vokri occurred in the prison's 4th ward, where inmates convicted of serious crimes including murder are housed. The altercation began when prison staff requested that inmates return to their cells. Due to the high temperatures, some complied while others refused, sparking a conflict that escalated into violence.

What's particularly surprising is that the assailant and his victim were friends. In 2018, they escaped together during their transfer to Crete from the prisoner transport van at the Piraeus port.

As for the 42-year-old perpetrator of the murder, he is serving a life sentence for the killing of two Albanians, aged 35 and 23 months, in Kallamata.

Xhuliano Halili, also known as "Niko," stands accused of another notorious crime. In November 2011, he allegedly carried out an assassination ordered by the infamous Greek criminal Vasilis Varelas for money laundering, targeting Fillim and Oligert Mesaja, originally from the village of Caj in Kukës. Halili shot the toddler's father in the head before stabbing the 2-year-old in the throat. He is also accused of two other contract killings in 2008 and 2009, targeting Greek citizens.

The incident underscores ongoing challenges within Greece's prison system, raising questions about security protocols and inmate management. As investigations continue, authorities are grappling with the complexities of preventing such tragic events in the future.
