Maliqi, Albania – Farmers from the Maliqi region have blocked a segment of the national road stretching from the Drithasi intersection to near the village of Symiz, on the Korçë-Pogradec route.
Maliqi Farmers Blocking the National Road Segment |
Reason for Protest
The protest stems from the low prices of key agricultural products such as wheat, corn, and potatoes. According to the farmers, the inability to sell their produce this year is due to large quantities of these crops being imported from neighboring countries at prices lower than those in the domestic market.
Tensions and Police Involvement
Tensions have not been absent during the protest. The police have requested the organizers not to block the national road as they do not have a permit for such an action. As the farmers refused to clear the road, it has been impossible to avoid physical confrontations between the parties involved.
Attempts to Resolve the Situation
Gjovalin Loka, the Director of Police, is personally attempting to calm and disperse the protestors from the road. Despite the efforts, the situation remains tense as the farmers continue to demand fair prices for their produce.
