A serious incident occurred on Friday, August 30th, at Turin Prison in Italy, involving several Albanian inmates. According to foreign media reports, a violent confrontation took place between 40 Albanian prisoners and Moroccan inmates. The conflict was sparked after one of the Albanians was stabbed in the face on Thursday, August 29th, local media report.
The situation escalated when the Albanian prisoners initially clashed with the prison officers who tried to intervene. The Albanians managed to steal the keys to the cells and then forced their way into the 12th section on the third floor, where they assaulted a Moroccan prisoner in retaliation for their injured friend, according to the Osapp union.
During the altercation, two police officers were injured as the inmates used a child's bed to block the gates, preventing the prison guards from entering and stopping the fight.
Leo Beneducci, the Secretary-General of the Penitentiary Police Union, expressed his concern over the situation, stating that the Turin prison is completely under the control of the inmates.
"In the gang warfare that now characterizes Turin prison, prison police officers are completely powerless and unable to react in time. The fact that the keys were taken is proof of this," Beneducci said.
