Historic Visit of Israel’s President Isaac Herzog to Albania

For the first time in history, an Israeli president has visited Albania. Isaac Herzog was welcomed by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and President Bajram Begaj. This significant visit marked a reinforcement of the longstanding and unconditional support that Albania continues to offer Israel, particularly in the face of recent global challenges.

During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Rama, President Herzog expressed deep gratitude for Albania’s unwavering support of Israel in its ongoing conflict with Hamas, which has been ongoing since October of the previous year. “The Israeli nation will never forget how you and the Albanian people stood by Israel,” Herzog emphasized, reflecting on the close ties between the two nations.

“It is meaningful for me to be among friends at such a painful time for Israel. We are nearing a year since Hamas brutally attacked Israel. Since that dark day in October, Albania has firmly stood on the right side of history, alongside Israel. Your country has once again demonstrated its steadfast support. Our work is not yet finished, as hostages are still held in Gaza under cruel conditions. Unfortunately, we are fighting more than just terrorists at this time,” Herzog remarked.

The president also highlighted the long and significant history shared between Albanians and Jews. He recalled how Albania provided refuge for European Jews during the Holocaust, serving as a sanctuary when much of Europe was engulfed in violence and hatred. “We have much to learn from each other. I am very pleased to be here and to have the opportunity to discuss these matters today,” Herzog noted.

Earlier in the day, President Herzog held talks with Albanian President Bajram Begaj. This visit is historically important, as it marks the first time an Israeli head of state has visited Albania, further strengthening diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The visit underlines the deep historical and diplomatic ties, and the shared values of friendship, support, and solidarity that have brought Albania and Israel together, especially in times of crisis.
