Albania: Alarming Rise in Domestic Violence Cases

  A recent report by the Albanian State Police reveals a disturbing increase in domestic violence cases during the first six months of 2024. According to official data, 686 women were reported to have been victims of domestic violence, surpassing the 655 cases recorded during the same period last year.

These alarming figures indicate that domestic violence remains a serious problem in Albania. The capital, along with major cities like Durrës and Vlora, have recorded the highest number of cases, while the districts of Kukës and Gjirokastra have reported the lowest.

A Growing Crisis

Compared to previous years, the number of domestic violence cases continues to rise. In 2023, 1378 cases were reported, while in 2022 the number was 1371. These figures demonstrate that domestic violence is a widespread and growing phenomenon that requires urgent action from all involved parties.

Protective Orders

A positive aspect is that a larger number of women are seeking and obtaining protective orders. In the first six months of 2024, 1019 women and girls immediately received protective orders, a sign that victims are becoming more aware of their rights and are taking steps to protect themselves.
