Albania Blocks Extradition of Russian National Igor Kokunov Amid Controversy

The extradition process for Igor Kokunov, a Russian citizen arrested in Albania, has been suspended pending further judicial review. Despite the suspension order from Albania’s Constitutional Court, Kokunov’s attorney, Isuf Shehu, claims that his client is currently being extradited to Russia in violation of this legal decision.

Kokunov faces charges in Russia for allegedly "holding a high position in the criminal hierarchy." According to his legal team, the extradition request was signed by Russia's Deputy Prosecutor General, who has been declared persona non grata by several international organizations, including those with Albania as a member.

Kokunov was detained in Murriqan in August last year on an international arrest warrant, despite having previously traveled to Germany and Montenegro. His legal team argues that extraditing him to Russia under these conditions disregards Albania's legal processes and international obligations.
