Cannabis Under Police Watch in Albania: Four Peqin Officers Suspended Amid Shocking Allegations

The Police Oversight Agency in Elbasan and Korçë has suspended four police officers from Peqin for suspected involvement in the criminal offense of “Abuse of Office.” The individuals suspended are:

Police Oversight Agency officer accompagning an Albanian police officer
Police Oversight Agency officer accompagning an Albanian police officer
- Commissioner Shkëlzen Xhameta, Head of the Crime Investigation Section

- Deputy Commissioner Sefer Dushku, Crime Investigation Specialist

- Inspector Arben Koseni, Assistant Crime Investigation Specialist

- Inspector Aranit Koni, Community Policing Assistant Specialist

This action was taken in collaboration with the Prosecution Office at the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction in Elbasan, which executed personal preventive security measures to suspend these officers from exercising public duties.

The suspensions are linked to an ongoing investigation that suggests the officers may have allowed, through specific actions or omissions, the illegal cultivation of narcotic plants. These suspicions were confirmed in two separate incidents related to the residence of a citizen identified as R.B.

On September 13, the citizen R.B. was arrested by the Elbasan Police Directorate for the criminal offense of “Cultivation of narcotic plants” after cannabis sativa plants were discovered during a search of his residence.

Investigations are still ongoing to determine whether other police officers were involved in this illegal activity and to clarify the exact role of all those implicated.

This case highlights concerns over potential corruption within the police force and the authorities' efforts to hold public officials accountable for their actions.
