Macedonian politician of Albanian origin, Ali Ahmeti, has addressed an urgent letter to international leaders expressing concerns over the stability of North Macedonia (RMV) and the wider Balkan region. In his letter, Ahmeti warns that the current government’s actions threaten the foundational principles of the Ohrid Agreement, risking a return to tensions reminiscent of the 2001 crisis.
The letter was addressed to the Presidents of Albania and Kosovo, key EU leaders, the German Chancellor, the President of France, and the U.S. Secretary of State. Ahmeti highlighted three recent government decisions as particularly concerning: a plan to repeal the Law on Languages, a prohibition on identifying ethnic affiliation in state institutions, and the formation of a new government majority. He believes these decisions pose a severe threat to peace and stability both within North Macedonia and across the region.
“These three recent actions—the plan to repeal the Law on Languages, the prohibition of ethnic identification in state institutions, and the formation of the new government majority—pose a serious threat to peace, stability, inter-ethnic harmony, and the principles of multi-ethnic democracy in North Macedonia,” Ahmeti wrote.
Ahmeti emphasized that these issues extend beyond domestic politics, warning of “grave consequences for the region’s stability.” He stressed that these actions undermine key elements of peace and equality, potentially dragging North Macedonia back to pre-2001 conditions that precipitated past conflict.
In closing, Ahmeti urged for a unified and decisive response to safeguard the Ohrid Agreement and the guaranteed rights of the Albanian community within North Macedonia.
