Čanak noted the recent improvements in relations between Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and the United States, Germany, and France, highlighted by visits from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and the US Assistant Secretary of Energy.

However, Čanak argued that despite these positive developments, Serbia is playing a double game. While seeking to improve ties with Western powers, Vučić is also trying to maintain good relations with Russia.

"President Vučić knows very well that the Russians don't forgive and that they would kill him if he moves too close to the West," Čanak said. "On the other hand, he knows that Serbia has over 70% of its trade with EU countries and the US. So he knows he needs to move away from the East towards the West, but he's also afraid of Russia's position in the UN Security Council. This is a game of two chairs, and Vučić has been playing this double game for more than a decade."
