Kosovo Army, 208 million euro budget

Kosovo Army, 208 million euro budget

For the upcoming year, the Government of Kosovo has allocated around 208 million euros to the Kosovo Security Force (KSF), which is approximately 2% of Kosovo's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This aligns Kosovo more closely with NATO standards. The Ministry of Defense states that this budget increase will enable significant improvements in human resources, military personnel training, and operational capacities through investments in weaponry. These investments are intended to strengthen national defense and prepare the KSF to participate in international peacekeeping missions.

In addition to regular funding and donations from other countries, Kosovo’s military is also financed by the Security Fund, established in 2022. This fund, classified as a state secret, has not disclosed the amount collected. Citizens and other donors can contribute to this fund through a designated bank account.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) has criticized the projected budget, calling it insufficient for further enhancing the KSF. PDK deputy Berisha described it as a "survival budget" rather than one aimed at development, stressing that the KSF is vital to national security and the country's image. He also criticized the technology investments, including the purchase of older drone models, and emphasized that many of these military improvements are based on a pre-existing 10-year transition plan rather than being achievements of the current government.

The new budget for 2025 is expected to be approved by the Kosovo Assembly on Monday.
