Residents of the village of Pajovë in Peqin gathered today for a protest to raise awareness following the tragic death of 8-year-old Enio Tabaku, who was killed in a road accident just days ago. The young boy was struck by a speeding car while he was on the side of the road, only meters from his home.
In an emotional interview on Euronews Albania’s program “People,” Enio’s sister spoke about the loss of her brother, describing it as a life taken unjustly. “My brother’s life was taken unfairly. He was on the sidewalk when a car, supposedly moving at 15 km per hour, hit him. This isn’t right. I want cars to slow down because they drive too fast,” she said. For her, Enio was more than just a brother—he was someone she loved deeply, along with their other sister.
Her plea to authorities is to install barriers along the road and take immediate action to limit speeding in their area. "Today, it was my brother who lost his life, but tomorrow it could be someone else. I fear for all the children,” she expressed, holding a sign that urged protection for those who cannot protect themselves.
Enio was fatally struck just steps from his family’s home. His father, Flamur Tabaku, who organized a peaceful protest in his son’s memory, recounted the heart-wrenching moment he learned of his son’s death. He described the overwhelming grief he has endured since the incident and the disbelief that such a tragedy happened so close to home. “It’s true anguish. I can’t bear it. I raised my child to this age only for someone to run him over at our doorstep,” he said, his voice breaking. “They told me, Flamur, your son is dead. I fainted twice. Seeing my child like that—I couldn’t recognize him.”
Flamur also revealed that he had already suffered a significant loss when his wife passed away four years ago, a tragedy he managed to bear. But he describes this new loss as unbearable.
Calling for justice, Flamur urged the state to implement stricter regulations to prevent such incidents in the future and demanded accountability for those responsible. “The state must act and take maximum measures. I want justice. The person responsible deserves to be punished. If they go unpunished, we’ll take other measures,” he stated firmly.
This devastating incident has brought the community together in a shared demand for safer roads and has sparked a call for action to protect children and families from similar tragedies.
