As Eurasia faces heightened instability, with ongoing conflicts and the specter of a potential escalation between Serbia and Kosovo, Albania is taking significant steps to bolster its national defense. The Ministry of Defense has opened recruitment for young Albanians to join its armed forces, marking a critical moment for the country’s military readiness.

A Call to Service
The Ministry’s initiative invites young men and women aged 18 to 30 to apply as active-duty soldiers by December 31. Applications can be submitted online through the Ministry’s website or in person at the recruitment center in Tirana. This effort comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance Albania’s defense capabilities in a region marked by persistent volatility.
New Incentives for Service
Albania’s government has recently enacted legal reforms aimed at making military service more attractive. These measures include substantial salary increases, modernized weaponry investments, and additional benefits for personnel.
- Improved Salaries: Newly recruited soldiers and corporals will receive a minimum monthly salary of 75,000 ALL (approximately €630).
- Healthcare and Training: Free healthcare and access to advanced training programs both domestically and abroad are guaranteed.
Expanding the Armed Forces
Albania’s armed forces currently comprise approximately 7,000 active personnel. In addition, a pool of reservists supports the country’s defense needs, with 400 already activated in the current phase. The Ministry of Defense aims to recruit an additional 2,100 members, including both active-duty soldiers and reservists.
Reservists are called to service for 15 to 40 days annually and are entitled to the same rights and benefits as active-duty soldiers. This hybrid model ensures Albania maintains a ready and adaptable defense force in light of emerging threats.
Geopolitical Context
This recruitment drive takes place against a backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions. Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine and its disinformation campaigns in the Balkans have amplified concerns about regional security.
