Albania to Restrict TikTok: A Bold Step Towards Safer Schools

On Saturday, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama convened a meeting with parents and teachers to outline a new set of measures aimed at improving safety in schools. A key component of the plan involves blocking access to the social media platform TikTok in Albania for one year, a move he described as necessary to address concerns about the platform’s impact on children.

“We have conducted all the necessary technological research, and it will take us 6 to 8 weeks, starting from the beginning of next year, to fully block TikTok in Albania. For a year, TikTok will no longer be available in the Republic of Albania. During this time, we will also observe how other countries handle similar challenges and assess TikTok’s responses,” Rama explained during the meeting.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the decision was driven by broader concerns about children’s safety and the negative effects of social media, following a recent tragedy that prompted nationwide reflection.

“It took a tragedy to mobilize an entire society,” Rama stated. “As always, responses to such events can vary—some choose theatrics, while others take responsibility. What has emerged clearly in this process is the divide between public institutions and the destructive narratives in certain parts of the media and parliament versus the direct concerns of our population.”

Rama acknowledged the challenges posed by technology and media in shaping young minds. He noted that parents had expressed significant concerns about widespread violence and misinformation propagated by media, which undermine efforts to instill positive values in children.

“Our consultations have highlighted the dangers of TikTok, but parents have also asked how we will address the broader issues of violence and mass miseducation through media that runs counter to our goals for children,” he said.

The Prime Minister underscored that while it is impossible to prevent every tragedy, the government’s responsibility lies in its response. He expressed confidence in the concrete measures that have emerged from inclusive discussions with stakeholders in education.

“These measures will ensure a safer and better education system. This is our duty,” Rama affirmed.

He also defended the Minister of Education from criticisms that emerged in the wake of the tragedy, reiterating his full support. “For those who sought to gain absurd advantages from the tragedy of a family’s loss, pointing fingers and demanding personal accountability from the Minister of Education, I want to be clear: the Minister has my full support. Just as she improved the healthcare system, she will improve the education system,” Rama declared.

The Prime Minister’s remarks highlight a commitment to using recent lessons to drive systemic change and foster a safer, more supportive environment for Albania’s youth.
