The Italian government is awaiting a decision from the Court of Cassation regarding the contentious issue of transferring migrants to centers in Gjadër, Albania.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced the development, clarifying that the centers will be activated based on necessity. "The matter is under review by the Court of Cassation. We must wait and see. At the moment, there is no urgent need to activate the centers," the minister stated.

Piantedosi emphasized that migrant arrivals in recent months have significantly decreased. Decisions on the use of the centers will depend on the evolving migration situation.

The minister also dismissed unconfirmed media reports suggesting that one of the rooms in the Gjadër camp had been repurposed as a shelter for dogs. "That’s just an amusing anecdote," he commented.

While the Italian government has referred the case to the Court of Cassation, prosecutors in Rome have taken the matter to the European Court of Justice. The EU's highest court is expected to rule next year on whether hosting migrants in Albania complies with European law.

This legal and political saga highlights ongoing challenges in managing migration flows while adhering to international legal standards.
