The Albanian Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEPJ) has officially responded to the expulsion and subsequent removal of two Albanian citizens from Serbian territory. The incident, which took place on January 23, 2025, involved representatives of Albanian civil society who had been participating in a seminar in Belgrade.

In reaction to this development, the Serbian Ambassador to Tirana, Slobodan Vukčević, was summoned by MEPJ to address the issue. During the meeting, the Albanian authorities expressed their profound regret and serious concern regarding this action. They labeled it as incompatible with efforts to maintain good neighborly relations and as a direct impediment to the principle of free movement for Albanian citizens.

The MEPJ called upon Serbian authorities to provide immediate clarification for the decision and urged a review and appeal of the measures taken. Furthermore, the ministry emphasized the importance of ensuring that such incidents are not repeated in the future to avoid negative repercussions on bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Albanian Embassy in Belgrade is closely monitoring the situation, while Tirana awaits an official response from Serbian officials regarding the matter. This incident comes at a time when both nations are expected to work collaboratively toward regional stability and mutual understanding.

The expulsion has been viewed by many as a test of Serbia's commitment to fostering improved relations with its neighbors, particularly in the context of ongoing efforts to promote cooperation and reconciliation in the Western Balkans. Albania has reiterated its dedication to dialogue and constructive engagement but insists that such actions undermine trust and progress.

This diplomatic response underscores Albania’s firm stance on protecting the rights of its citizens abroad and its broader commitment to upholding European values of freedom of movement and mutual respect among neighboring states.
