Eilan, a 1-year-old boy evacuated from Gaza to receive critical medical care in Albania, is making remarkable progress. Currently being treated at the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center (QSUT) in Tirana, Eilan’s story reflects resilience and the power of compassionate intervention.

A Fragile Beginning
When Eilan arrived in Albania, he was in a fragile state. Exhausted, malnourished, and visibly distressed, he required immediate medical attention. As Dr. Enesa Kuqi, the pediatrician who accompanied him from the airport to the hospital, explained, “The child’s condition was relatively stable but he was tired, malnourished, and very scared. He wouldn’t cooperate, and we faced significant challenges calming him down.”
Medical Care and Remarkable Recovery
Eilan’s primary health issue was recurrent bronchiolitis, which necessitated hospitalization. Under the care of Dr. Durim Sala and the intensive pediatric therapy team, his condition has seen rapid improvement.
“Eilan’s condition is very good, if not excellent. The progress is very positive,” Dr. Sala shared. With ongoing treatment and close monitoring, Eilan is now more active, smiling, and even playing. He is expected to leave the hospital within two to three days, continuing his recovery at home with his family.
A Journey of Healing
Eilan is the fifth child of a family from Gaza. Accompanying him in Albania are his father, his 19-year-old sister, and his 3-year-old brother. They are currently housed at the Babrru Asylum Center, where they are receiving both health and psychological support.
The journey has not only been about medical recovery but also emotional healing. Eilan’s transformation from a scared, malnourished child to an active, smiling toddler symbolizes hope for families fleeing conflict.
A Symbol of Compassion
Eilan’s story is a testament to Albania’s humanitarian efforts in providing refuge and care for those in need. It also highlights the dedication of medical professionals who have worked tirelessly to ensure the young boy’s recovery.
As Eilan prepares to reunite with his family outside the hospital, his journey offers a glimmer of hope amidst the struggles faced by so many families displaced by conflict. His laughter and play are small yet profound victories in a world where such moments are often hard-won.
