The situation at Bunec Beach has returned to normal following the partial collapse of the reservoir wall of a hydropower plant in the hilltop village of Sasaj, located in the Himarë municipality. Nearby Lukovë reported power outages hours later due to flooding at the local substation, leaving the area without electricity.
The incident, which occurred around midday on Thursday, caused widespread panic and posed a significant flooding risk. The reservoir, containing approximately 15,000 cubic meters of water, emptied into the streets, creating a torrent of water and mud that inundated at least 12 businesses along Bunec Beach.
Authorities stated the collapse took place at approximately 12:26 PM. The ensuing water flow initially rendered the road connecting Bunec to Lukovë passable only for heavy vehicles.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the collapse of the dam’s retaining wall, a structure built in 2010.
"Currently, the Bunec–Piqeras section of the national road is accessible again, and municipal teams from Himarë are working to clear the mud. The situation is being monitored by the Vlora Prefecture and Civil Emergency Services," the Ministry of Defense announced.
Local police have urged residents to avoid travel in the affected area and to report any emergencies immediately.
Efforts to restore normalcy and assess damages continue, while the authorities emphasize the need for vigilance to prevent further incidents.
