Austria Recognizes Kosovo Driver’s Licenses Equally to Austrian Licenses

The Austrian Embassy in Pristina has announced that, starting from March 1, 2025, driver’s licenses from Kosovo of all categories will be considered equal to Austrian driver’s licenses. This decision comes as a result of an amendment to the relevant regulations and will significantly ease the process of converting Kosovo driver’s licenses in Austria.

According to the embassy’s statement, “Kosovo driver’s licenses were recognized in Austria on September 1, 2023, following the approval of the agreement for the establishment of the Transport Community under Article 23 of the Driver’s License Act (FSG).”

With the regulation change effective from March 1, 2025, Kosovo driver’s licenses across all categories will have the same legal standing as Austrian ones. This means that Kosovo drivers residing in Austria for over six months or those establishing permanent residence can convert their licenses without the need for a practical driving test.

This development marks a significant step in facilitating mobility for Kosovo citizens in Austria and strengthens the ties between the two countries in terms of transportation and legal recognition. The decision is expected to benefit many Kosovars living and working in Austria, eliminating bureaucratic hurdles and fostering better integration within the Austrian system.
