State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-SI/Brooklyn) and Assemblyman Charles D. Fall (D-SI/Brooklyn, District 61) have jointly approved a resolution in the Senate and Assembly to commemorate the 17th anniversary of Kosovo’s Independence on February 17, 2025, as reported by albinfo.ch.
Following the U.S. and NATO military intervention in Kosovo to end ethnic cleansing under Slobodan Milosevic’s regime, Kosovo now operates under a democratic Constitution and has established diplomatic relations with the United States.
A significant number of Kosovo nationals and Albanian-Americans have made their home in New York. The resolution acknowledges Kosovo’s cultural, political, and historical independence and recognizes the ongoing contributions of the Albanian-American community in New York, according to the sponsors of Resolution 62.
A Milestone Resolution for Kosovo’s Independence
Assemblyman Charles Fall emphasized the importance and significance of this resolution, stating:
“The Senate and Assembly recognized the importance of February 17th for Kosovo and for all Albanian-Americans across New York. I am proud to be part of this effort to recognize Kosovo’s independence on behalf of my district’s Albanian community.”
During the session at the New York State Senate, Ambassador Blerim Reka, the Consul General of Kosovo in New York, attended the ceremony alongside his staff to commemorate the occasion.
Kosovo’s Journey and Recognition
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Reka highlighted New York’s ongoing support for Kosovo’s Independence Day celebrations, stating:
“Kosovo, the youngest European state, was born out of a liberation struggle against Serbia’s colonialism, apartheid, and genocide against the Albanian people.”
He further added:
“Today, the Republic of Kosovo stands as the most democratic and pro-American nation, serving as a constitutional model for protecting its minorities.”
In conclusion, Ambassador Reka expressed his gratitude:
“Thank you, Senator Scarcella and Assemblyman Fall! Thank you, America!”
