The Ambassador of Kosovo to Germany, Faruk Ajeti, has announced that migrants who were previously registered as Serbian citizens can now change their registration and be recognized exclusively as citizens of Kosovo.

This change comes as a result of a circular issued by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, informing German institutions that the automatic registration of Kosovar citizens as Serbian nationals has been a long-standing and unfair error.
A Long-Standing Issue Now Resolved
According to Ajeti, this issue has persisted for over 17 years, affecting hundreds of thousands of Kosovar citizens who were wrongly registered as Serbian nationals. He emphasized that this change is the result of continuous efforts by Kosovar institutions and intensive communication with German authorities, including the Federal Chancellery, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, and the Federal Ministry of Justice.
Now, not only 16 German institutions but over 5,200 civil registration centers across Germany have received this circular and have been informed of the new procedures that put an end to this incorrect registration.
A Call to Kosovar Citizens
Ambassador Ajeti has called on all Kosovar citizens who have been registered as Serbian nationals to approach the relevant German authorities to correct their documentation. He also noted that citizens can seek assistance from the Embassy of Kosovo in Germany.
“From now on, they will be registered solely as citizens of Kosovo. We urge citizens residing in Germany who are affected by this issue to contact the relevant German authorities to correct their documentation. You must request that Serbian citizenship be permanently removed from the nationality category,” Ajeti stated.
This step marks a significant moment in addressing the status of Kosovar migrants in Germany, ensuring that their rights are respected and that their national identity is correctly recognized by German authorities.
