Court in Saranda Releases 17-Year-Old Who Stabbed Peer

The Court of Saranda has released 17-year-old K. Cora, placing him under the house arrest measure. Cora was arrested by the Saranda police on Thursday as the suspected perpetrator of the stabbing of 17-year-old Bari Kalemi, an incident that took place on Butrinti Street in Saranda.

Kalemi sustained three knife wounds to his stomach and thigh and was rushed to the Hospital of Vlora for more specialized treatment, while Cora was taken into custody. A third individual, Kalemi’s friend, was also involved in the incident and was brought in for questioning at the police station.

Following an investigation, the Prosecutor’s Office of Saranda carried out an in-depth inquiry and revealed that the event had unfolded differently than initially reported. It is suspected that Kalemi had attempted to attack Cora, who, acting in self-defense, inflicted the knife wounds on him.

As a result, Prosecutor Esmeranda Basho amended the charges against Cora to “Aggravated Wounding in Excess of Necessary Defense” and requested a legal review of his arrest in flagrante delicto, recommending the house arrest measure.

Judge Edona Vajushi confirmed the decision, imposing the same house arrest measure on Cora, who will reach the age of majority in seven months. The judge ruled that Cora must remain at his residence in neighborhood number 4, Guri Nazifi Street, Saranda, except during hours approved for attending educational and academic activities, with the permission of the prosecuting body.

Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether charges will be brought against the 17-year-old victim, as sources indicate signs of assault were noted on his body during the physical examination. Cora was defended in court by Çlirim Shahini.
