Diant Ramaj: The Talented Goalkeeper at a Crossroads Between Albania and Kosovo

Diant Ramaj is emerging as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in European football. The 23-year-old has shown his talent and potential through his journey across top clubs, starting with Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, where he served as the second-choice goalkeeper. His abilities soon earned him a move to Ajax, where he seized the starting position for a period and delivered impressive performances.

Diant Ramaj: The Talented Goalkeeper at a Crossroads Between Albania and Kosovo

Upon his arrival in the Netherlands, Ajax’s sporting director did not hesitate to compare the Albanian goalkeeper to one of Europe’s best. "I believe Diant Ramaj has the same potential as Ter Stegen. He is excellent with both feet, strong in one-on-one situations, brave in coming off his line, and has great game-reading ability," said Ajax’s director at the time. These qualities are exactly what the Albanian national team has been missing in goal, making Ramaj’s potential decision to represent Albania a major boost for the squad.

A New Chapter: From Ajax to Dortmund and Copenhagen

Despite his strong performances, Ramaj eventually left Ajax and signed for Borussia Dortmund. However, to ensure regular playing time, the German club loaned him out to FC Copenhagen. This move was designed to help him gain experience and maintain his development at a high level.

Meanwhile, a significant update has surfaced regarding Ramaj’s international career. Having played for Germany’s youth teams, the goalkeeper has been waiting for a senior call-up from the German national team. However, with that invitation never arriving, Ramaj is now considering his options. According to Albanian Football on Twitter, he is in discussions with both the Albanian and Kosovar Football Federations. This means he will soon have to make a final choice between representing Albania or Kosovo.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Despite his clear strengths as a modern goalkeeper, Ramaj has faced one consistent criticism throughout his career—his height. While his reflexes, positioning, and footwork have been highly rated, Dutch media often described his lack of height as his Achilles' heel.

"Undoubtedly, the German goalkeeper was the best signing among the many poor acquisitions made by the now-dismissed sporting director Mislintat. However, while Ramaj cannot be blamed for his height, this physical limitation may prevent him from reaching the absolute top level in European football," wrote De Telegraaf during his time at Ajax.

Even with this concern, Ramaj remains a highly talented goalkeeper. If he chooses to represent Albania, he will bring much-needed competition for Thomas Strakosha, potentially strengthening Albania’s defensive stability.

Now, the football world awaits Ramaj’s decision—will he choose Albania or Kosovo? Either way, he is set to be a key player for whichever national team he decides to represent.
