Electoral Crimes in Albania; SPAK Launched a Website Dedicated to Reporting

The right to vote is a fundamental pillar of democracy, yet in Albania, this right has often been undermined by electoral crimes committed during the country’s 35-year transition period. Political leaders have repeatedly been accused of manipulating elections, buying votes, and intimidating voters, thereby eroding public trust in the electoral process. However, a new initiative by the Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) aims to combat these abuses and ensure free and fair elections.

SPAK has recently launched a website dedicated to reporting electoral crimes, a significant step in the fight against election fraud. This initiative follows the agency’s publication of its strategy for preventing and investigating electoral crimes, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and accountability in the democratic process.

During a recent event, SPAK’s Chief, Altin Dumani, affirmed that investigations into electoral crimes would be conducted without prejudice. He assured that those who abide by the law and the Constitution have nothing to fear from the special monitoring structures overseeing the elections. Dumani emphasized that SPAK will initiate investigations whenever there are suspected cases of electoral fraud or criminal offenses related to elections.

“Anyone who respects the law and the Constitution should not fear anything. It is our legal and constitutional duty to launch investigations whenever we encounter cases that constitute criminal offenses,” Dumani stated.

Furthermore, he underscored the close collaboration between SPAK and the General Prosecutor’s Office in investigating electoral crimes. This cooperation is crucial in dismantling corrupt networks that have historically manipulated the electoral system for political gain.

The launch of SPAK’s reporting platform marks a critical step toward safeguarding the integrity of elections in Albania. Citizens now have a direct channel to report irregularities, and institutions are being held accountable for enforcing the law. For Albania to truly embrace democracy, protecting the vote must remain a national priority, ensuring that every citizen’s voice is heard and that the country’s future is decided by the people, not by corruption.
