Kosovo Strengthens Controls on Animal Products from Durres Due to Avian Flu Concerns

The Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) has announced increased control measures on shipments containing animal-origin products, live animals, and poultry from the Durres region of Albania. This decision follows concerns regarding the presence of the H5N1 avian influenza strain in the area.

Kosovo Strengthens Controls on Animal Products from Durres Due to Avian Flu Concerns

AUV has stated that it is in continuous communication with Albania’s National Veterinary and Plant Protection Authority to receive real-time updates on the zoonotic situation linked to avian flu. Currently, a farm near Durres has been identified as affected by the disease.

“In accordance with current legislation and in cooperation with Albanian authorities, AUV has implemented immediate border control measures. Border veterinary inspectors have been instructed to conduct thorough inspections of shipments containing animal-origin food products, as well as live animals and poultry. These procedures are being strictly followed to prevent any potential spread of the disease into our country,” the statement reads.

Furthermore, authorities emphasize that for now, the outbreak remains confined to a single, isolated farm. Albanian officials have swiftly enacted containment measures, including zone isolation and restrictions on internal movement.

“There is currently no necessity to impose broad import restrictions, as Kosovo does not import live poultry from the affected area. At this stage, the risk of H5N1 transmission through imports remains low. However, AUV remains on high alert and will adjust its measures according to the development of the situation.”

Farmers who raise poultry have been urged to immediately implement biosecurity measures to prevent the further spread of avian influenza.

“Through relevant associations, all commercial poultry farmers have been informed about biosecurity measures, which are essential for protecting their flocks. Activating self-monitoring systems and enforcing strict biosecurity protocols on farms are the most effective ways to combat this disease. Avian influenza primarily spreads through migratory birds, making prevention a challenge for any country. Therefore, cooperation from farmers and the proper implementation of preventive measures are crucial to safeguarding farms and the poultry industry in the region.”
