Riho Terras: Serbia's Future Under Putin's Dictate

The European Parliament's rapporteur for Kosovo, Riho Terras, has strongly criticized Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić following his recent show of support from Russian leader Vladimir Putin. In a recent conversation between the two leaders, Putin reassured Serbia of Russia’s backing, particularly as the Serbian government faces growing anti-government protests at home.

Terras expressed deep concern over Serbia’s political trajectory, accusing Vučić of steering the country towards a future dominated by Moscow's influence. According to Terras, Russia’s interference in the Balkans is nothing new, and Vučić is leaving no doubt about his alignment with Putin’s authoritarian model.

"Russia’s intervention patterns are not new, and President Vučić makes it clear – he envisions Serbia’s future under Putin’s dictate," Terras stated. He urged European authorities to take action in safeguarding the region’s independence and democratic integrity.

The European Union has also reacted to Serbia’s recent actions in the Council of Europe, condemning them as clear violations of the Ohrid Agreement. Serbia recently blocked Kosovo’s bid to attain special candidate status in the Political Committee of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly. According to an EU spokesperson, this move undermines the agreement aimed at normalizing relations between Serbia and Kosovo.

As tensions rise, the EU’s response and the broader international stance on Serbia’s alignment with Russia will be crucial in determining the geopolitical stability of the Balkans.
