Skopje, often cited as the most polluted city in Europe, is set to take a significant step toward improving its air quality and public transportation system. In today's government session, the authorities approved the procurement of 120 eco-friendly buses, a move aimed at enhancing public transport efficiency and reducing pollution levels.
According to an official statement from the government press service, the Ministry of Transport presented information regarding requests from local self-government units for the purchase of environmentally friendly buses. With financial resources already allocated from the Ministry of Transport's budget, the government has planned to acquire 120 eco-friendly buses. Out of these, 80 will be urgently allocated to NQP-Skopje to renew its fleet and improve urban transport services, while the remaining 40 will be distributed based on the economic justification and actual needs of each local unit.
Government officials emphasized that this initiative will significantly enhance the quality of public transportation services for citizens, reduce air pollution levels across municipalities, and contribute to sustainable development and environmental protection.
As Skopje struggles with dangerously high pollution levels, initiatives like this mark a crucial step toward addressing the city's environmental crisis. However, long-term solutions will require continuous investment in green infrastructure and policy measures aimed at reducing emissions from various sources.
The introduction of eco-friendly buses is expected to be a milestone in the country’s efforts to create a more sustainable urban environment and provide residents with a cleaner, healthier future.
