The port of Durrës recently became home to a spectacular maritime guest: the “Amerigo Vespucci,” the iconic tall ship of the Italian Navy. Anchored on Albanian shores for the very first time, this nearly 100-year-old sailing vessel opened its decks to the public, drawing large crowds of curious visitors—both locals and tourists, young and old.

“Since our students are learning Italian, this was a perfect opportunity to connect with Italian culture firsthand,” shared their teacher.
The children were visibly thrilled. “We loved the ship,” they said with excitement, walking across the wooden decks and taking in the historic atmosphere of the vessel.
Although detailed historical information was not available to all visitors, many expressed joy simply from the experience of exploring the ship’s beautiful interiors and impressive deck.
“It’s a rare sight—you can’t find something like this just anywhere. You have to take the chance to come and see it,” said one local resident.
“It was a wonderful experience to visit,” added another.
“What made it really special is that it’s made entirely of wood,” someone else noted with admiration.
Italian tourists, too, were among those drawn to the ship during its brief stay in Durrës. One visiting tourist reflected proudly on what the “Amerigo Vespucci” represents:
“Every Italian feels a sense of pride when it comes to this ship—it carries our maritime history and culture.”
Another Italian visitor, who had eagerly awaited the ship’s arrival, said:
“I visited with great pleasure. It’s a historic ship, currently on a world tour, and it’s spending a few days here in Durrës. I truly enjoyed the visit—it’s an impressive vessel. Though old, it has been beautifully restored. I’m not sure if this is its second or third visit here, but the moment I heard it was coming, I didn’t hesitate to come and see it.”
Commissioned in 1931, the “Amerigo Vespucci” has long served as a training ship for the Italian Navy. Renowned for its elegance and traditional craftsmanship, it is often described as “the most beautiful ship in the world.” With its tall masts, majestic sails, and timeless design, the vessel is not just a ship—it’s a floating ambassador of Italy’s maritime heritage and professional naval tradition.
As it continues its journey around the world, the visit of the “Amerigo Vespucci” to Durrës is sure to be remembered as a special chapter in the city’s own maritime story.
