US Experts Return to Albanian Special Prosecution Following U.S. Policy Review

Since last Thursday, all OPDAT (Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance, and Training) experts stationed at SPAK (Special Anti-Corruption Structure) since its inception have resumed their duties. Their return follows a temporary suspension imposed by the U.S. State Department as part of a broader review of American foreign aid programs.

A U.S. embassy official responded to inquiries from Televizioni Klan regarding this issue, clarifying that while certain programs deemed essential to U.S. national interests have been reinstated, American foreign assistance is still undergoing a comprehensive review. Following their return, OPDAT experts have held meetings with special prosecutors to outline the continuation of cooperation and technical support.

“In accordance with President Trump’s Executive Order of January 20 on the Reassessment and Reorganization of U.S. Foreign Assistance, Secretary Rubio initiated a review of all U.S. foreign aid to ensure that programs are effective and aligned with U.S. foreign policy under the ‘America First’ agenda. Some programs considered essential to U.S. national interests have resumed, while the review of foreign aid remains ongoing,” stated the U.S. official.

This development marks a significant step in maintaining international cooperation in judicial reforms and anti-corruption efforts in Albania. The continuation of OPDAT’s work with SPAK is expected to further strengthen the fight against corruption and organized crime in the country. However, the broader implications of the ongoing U.S. foreign aid review remain to be seen, as further adjustments to international assistance programs could impact various initiatives worldwide.
